The not so sexy skittle team

If the purpose of skittles was to take a large wooden ball, hurl it down an alley and aim in such a way that it passes between nine wobbly pins and to avoid them all – the Burtle Skittle team would excel. It’s true to say this week’s skittle outing was not bathed in glory.

This was the team’s first outing to the Sexy’s Arms at Blackford, whilst the pub was very nice, good beer, friendly owner, very nice supper of ham, onion, chips and bread and a good sized table for cards – the alley appeared fearsome, bathed in green it seemed to goad the captain to challenge it. The captain unfazed by this new challenge faced his team with his best ‘paddington bear’ stare, no words needed.

The home team started with a rousing 62 which included a flopper of 15. Burtle skittled off and started with a meager 54, the captain growled. another hand of  60 was wrote up.  The team was just getting used the alley – that was it, captain stamped off the test the beer confident things would turn around.

Home team returned with two hands of 60. Burtle responded with two hands of 58 and 56. This was not good enough. Beer was drank, cards played. Home team came back with 55 and 65.

Captain returned and surveyed the score board. A big hand was needed. 58 and 56 was written up, oh woe was our captain. It all came down to the final hands.

Home team wrote up scores of 52 and 59.  Burtle was 12 down and needed 72 to win.

The captain rose up to his full height and gave the team a firm but fair talk, even a mexican wave rippled through the team. The air was positive, the team buzzed, beer was drank – how could they not fail.

That was all. 51 was written to the board. By this point our captain was slumped in a chair reading some secret text that must of been written on his palms,  as his head was well and truly buried in his hands.

And so this was the first league defeat of the Burtle Skittle team. Next week was another match.

Man of the match was the team’s own anchor ‘ Colin Councillor Pople’ he was the only player to rise the challenge of the alley and wrote up a very respectable score of 70.
