Universe, Stars and Disco

tap tap tap, the old captain made his way to the pub door. Above him the early winter sky stretched out and the stars had started to make their appearance.

now it’s said, the deep thinkers amongst us will look up at a nights sky and will not only contemplate just a single star, but the entire universe laid out in front of them.

The captain paused and looked up.

“I wonder if there will be chips for supper” he mused to himself. His stomach rumbled,  broke his train of thought and he continued his lopsided journey to the bar.

Tonight was a home game and after last week’s defeat the captain was eager for a win.

As tradition and rules dictate the home team skilled first. A mediocre 62 was written to the board. The captain grumbled and wobbled off to the bar in search of cider and pork rinds.

Our challengers returned with two hands of 63. on his return the captain surveyed the score and declared ‘game on’ and in response the team wrote up scores of 66 and 61. Our challengers returned with 64 and 59. Burtle was maintaining their lead but the game was close with only a few pins in it.

The captain wobbled uneasy on his peg – was this nerves or or just the 5th pint of ‘Pheasant Plucker’ kicking in  ?

The home team mustered and returned to the alley. The plucky youngster of the team wrote up a storming 17 hand, the team spurred on by his brilliance wrote up a total of 79, they followed this with another hand of 66. This pushed our home team to a 20 pin lead, the captain double checked his mathematics and proceeded to perform a small sea shanty for the team in his glee.  He skipped, wobbled, and chuckled to the bar.

Our challengers were not done and returned a score of 70 and 62.

Much beer was consumed, pork rinds demolished and peanuts hovered up – there was two hands left.

A little worse for wear the team wrote up scores of 63 and 64. The visitors needed 81 to win.

A worthy challenge and the team wrote up a final score of 62.

Victory

Man of the match was again Stevie ‘Disco Dude’ B with an impressive final score of 66. Stevie once appeared on Top of the Pops as a backing dancer for the Village People. It’s said that his shirt ripping solo during ‘Macho Man’ was so intense st johns ambulance had to be called to attend to swooning audience members.

The captain had chips for supper – all was right in the universe.
